To become a Correctional Officer in California, applicants must pass the entrance exam known as the California Corrections Written Exam. This is in addition to other assessments, like the Physical Abilities Test, Background Investigation and Panel Interview.
There is NO standard for the Correctional Officer Entrance Exam in the U.S. Each state decides what content will be included on their respective exams. There are, however, common hiring standards that all states are trying to achieve. They want their correctional officers to have: the ability to read and follow procedures, the ability to write clearly and fill out forms accurately, good judgement, basic math skills, the ability to observe and recall details, and the ability to keep track of people while they are moving around.
